Opportunity for Film & Media Companies
Background
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) Enterprise Centre in collaboration with Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts is launching an opportunity for a North West film & TV production company to engage in supporting its enterprise delivery to students within FASS.
The primary objective for the FASS Enterprise Centre is to raise awareness of enterprise across the Arts and Social Science disciplines and to demonstrate to students the opportunities that exist and routes into self-employment as a career choice. As part of this move, FASS and LICA will collaboratively launch a competition for budding, entrepreneurial student film-makers in February 2012. The aim of the competition is to raise awareness of entrepreneurship/ self-employment as a career choice and encourage students to demonstrate their initiative, motivation and commitment to making things happen through the creation of a documentary-style film capturing the qualities of a series of inspirational and entrepreneurial role-models.
The creators of the winning entry will receive a number of prizes, including the opportunity to undertake a period of hands-on training in film-making and gain exposure to the opportunities and challenges for entrepreneurs within the film and media sector. The University is seeking the involvement of a North West film company to deliver this aspect of the support.
Outline
Through the opportunity to work with the host film company, we will be looking for our students to receive:
• Training and support:
- to further development of basic film-making skills, developed through study and / or the competition
- to develop their awareness of running a company within the media sector
• An opportunity to gain hands-on experience of working on film projects
Further Details
• The company will have experience of working with young people in a training capacity, either in providing structured placements or training schemes around the development of film & TV production.
• The company will be engaged in film-making opportunities between April 2012 and August 2012 through which the students can gain hands-on experience of the process.
• The company is able to provide the training and support necessary to enable the students to develop and apply their practical skills in film-making and gain an insight into the operation of a company within the media sector.
• The opportunity will last no fewer than seven days.
• The company should outline the proposed structure of the opportunity for the students, fees and related costs in the application document
• Payment will be made on receipt of an invoice following the completion of the hosting period.
Requirements
The company will be required to:
• Agree to abide by Lancaster University’s equal opportunities policy and code of conduct which is set out on the University website at http://www.lancs.ac.uk/depts/equalopps/default.htm
• Complete the University’s health and safety and risk assessment forms and provide evidence of relevant policy documentation in relation to relevant insurance cover.
• Participate in the University’s broader research brief by providing feedback towards the development of a case study on University-business engagement and / or enterprise development
• Liaise closely with the project team within FASS and LICA in the delivery and monitoring stages of the opportunity.

• References from previous placement students, trainees or partner higher education establishment
